The ASU MSPO Program curriculum follows a strict sequence of five semesters at full-time enrollment.

Course Sequence

Course Descriptions

Through engagement with the curriculum, students will learn how to assess patients with impairment of human movement or musculoskeletal abnormalities, formulate appropriate prescription recommendations, implement O&P treatment plans using effective clinical decision-making and problem-solving skills, comply with practice management plans, and integrate in lifelong learning skills. Students will participate in educational activities in foundational and applied sciences, clinical decision-making, principles of research, application of evidence-based practice, and other necessary areas in the context of effective prosthetics and orthotics practice.

The program utilizes an interprofessional approach to prosthetics & orthotics education, with students sharing foundational content courses with classmates from other health science disciplines. Curricular involvement of faculty and other students from programs in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Rehabilitation Studies offers early training and experiences in working as part of a diverse healthcare team, similar to clinical practice.

Students’ experience in the program culminates in academic readiness for the written board certification exam in prosthetics & orthotics, as well as completion and presentation of a capstone research project that is developed over a series of four research courses. Students are encouraged to brainstorm their own research ideas, and are open to collaboration with faculty in the College of Health Sciences as well as use of laboratory equipment and materials.
