How to Apply for Graduate Admission to ASU

1 Complete the online application.

The Harold Lloyd Murphy Graduate School prepares you to be a leader in your field. We offer advanced degrees in education, accountancy, general sciences, health sciences, history and social work.

We accept applications on a rolling deadline, so all of these programs will help propel you to the next level of your career. Take the first step of your journey and fill out your graduate admission application.

2 Upload all documents to GradCAS.

Once you create your account in GradCAS, you will need to provide a few documents to complete your application for your graduate admission. Here’s what you will need:

  • Resume.
  • GRE/MAT test scores.
  • GMAT scores (Master of Accountancy only).
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
  • Three professional letters of recommendation. These should come from individuals who can speak positively about your ability to do graduate-level work in your desired field.
  • Statement of Purpose: This is where you state your purpose and objective for seeking a graduate degree. Be sure to mention any employment and academic experiences related to the field you plan to study.
  • If you are applying for graduate admission to the Alternative, Educational Specialist, Doctoral, Instructional Leadership or Social Work programs, additional documents may be required.

3 Apply for assistantships and fellowships.

Assistantships and fellowships are a great way to help offset the cost of a graduate education once you are admitted into the Harold Lloyd Murphy Graduate School at ASU. Available opportunities vary by department and college, so take a minute to learn about what’s possible during your graduate career.

ASU Graduate Admissions Requirements

To be admitted to the Harold Lloyd Murphy Graduate School at Alabama State University, you must have:

A bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college or university. You also must have maintained a minimum GPA of 2.5 as an undergraduate. For both the Alternative A and Traditional Master’s program in Education, we also require a 2.5 GPA.

  • If you are planning to pursue a Master of Accountancy degree, you need a minimum 2.75 undergraduate GPA and 3.0 graduate GPA.
  • GPA requirements for the doctoral programs vary by degree.

International Students

If you are an international student, we would love to have you at ASU! We just need some additional documentation for the graduate admissions process:

  • A satisfactory score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
  • An original copy of your college transcript, evaluated in English on a 4.0 scale, from an accredited international transcript evaluation agency, such as World Education Services (www.wes.org).
  • An affidavit of financial support that shows your ability to pay for all of your graduate education expenses.

Special Admissions

If you would like to expand your horizons by taking graduate-level courses at Alabama State University but don’t want to pursue a degree, there is still opportunity for you at ASU. The graduate admissions process for this path are as follows:

  • Apply online (application only)
  • $25 application fee
  • An official transcript showing you completed your bachelor’s degree
