Master of Rehabilitation Counseling (MRC)

Welcome to ASU’s Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling Program

Rehabilitation Counseling is a systematic process in which persons with physical, developmental, cognitive, and emotional disabilities are assisted in achieving their personal, career, and independent living goals in the most integrated settings possible through the application of the counseling process. The counseling process involves communication, goal setting, and beneficial growth or change through self-advocacy, psychological, vocational, social, and behavioral interventions.

Prospective rehabilitation counselors are expected to demonstrate emotional maturity, ethics and integrity, effective interpersonal skills, and genuine concern for others. Students should be receptive to constructive feedback, as well as personal and professional growth opportunities afforded through coursework, group labs, supervision, practicum, and internship experiences.

The specific techniques and modalities utilized within the rehabilitation counseling process may include, but not be limited to: assessment and appraisal; diagnosis and treatment planning; career counseling; individual and group counseling; treatment interventions focused on psychosocial adjustment to disability; case management and service coordination; consultation and access to rehabilitation technology; and interventions to remove environmental, employment and attitudinal barriers.

Our five semester curriculum (60 credit hours) prepares students to become competent rehabilitation counselors. The online program offers Asynchronous and Synchronous intensive coursework as well as practicum and internship experiences, where students are able to integrate the practical knowledge and clinical skills necessary for competent professional practice.
