The national holiday observing the 96th birthday and life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., will be commemorated by the National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture (National Center) at Alabama State University.
The National Center's event will be held in a virtual format on Monday, Jan. 20 at 11 a.m. The celebration may be viewed either on Facebook @civilrightscenter or on YouTube at The Center for Civil Rights at ASU.
Dr. Janice Franklin, the executive director of the National Center and the dean of the Levi Watkins Learning Center, shared that the theme of the observance is Alabama State University: A Community of Support for an Emerging Civil Rights Activist.
"The program is based upon the idea that Alabama State University served as a support system for Dr. King as he sought to shape his new life in Montgomery, Alabama," said Dean Franklin. "This program is based on Dr. King’s need for an intellectually, culturally, and socially fulfilling environment, even as he advanced his career as a major advocate for Blacks’ full rights as American citizens."
