Master’s Degree in Prosthetics and Orthotics Program

Develop the knowledge and skills necessary to provide prosthetics and orthotics services to traditional and underserved communities. At Alabama State University, our Master of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics Program teaches you to help others live more active and enjoyable lives by improving functional mobility and quality of life.

You’ll learn how to evaluate those with impairment of human movement and musculoskeletal abnormalities, develop the knowledge and skills to design appropriate prosthetic and orthotic devices and produce treatment plans using effective problem-solving skills. Your clinical decision-making will integrate relevant research grounded in evidence-based practice and will also consider the management of clinical practice as a business.

At ASU, you’ll also engage with a diverse community of patients and practitioners to build experience that is transferrable to many employment settings and develop the tools and techniques needed to make the most out of residency employment and to pass clinical certification exams.

We are the only institution in Alabama to offer a clinical preparation program in the discipline of prosthetics and orthotics, as well as the only Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the nation to offer a prosthetics and orthotics program.

Our on-campus degree in prosthetics and orthotics, accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and supported by the National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE), admits just 10 graduate students each year. Pursuing the full-time orthotics and prosthetics degree, you can enter the workforce as a resident practitioner in just five semesters.

At ASU, our master’s degree in prosthetics and orthotics combines engineering, health care and material science principles to prepare you to be a vital member of a rehabilitation team. Our 66-credit-hour degree includes:

  • An interdisciplinary curriculum alongside physical therapy, occupational therapy and rehabilitation counseling students — with one-third of our courses being delivered by a collaborative team of instructors.
  • Significant hands-on, project-based, experiential instruction — with half of our courses executed primarily in a lab or clinical environment.
  • Engagement with prosthetic and orthotic patient models to build interpersonal and clinical evaluation skills — our device fabrication and fitting projects instill values of continuous reflection and learning.
  • Building content knowledge across a series of semesters, often with the same instructors. Your research experiences culminate in fully executed, student-led projects that are routinely presented at national prosthetics and orthotics conferences.

Upon finishing your coursework, you will gain paid residency employment, becoming board-eligible after a 12-month prosthetics or orthotics residency or an 18-month dual-discipline residency.

What Can You Do With a Master’s in Prosthetics and Orthotics?

ASU’s graduate degree in prosthetics and orthotics prepares you for clinical residency and board certification exams. In fact, 100% of graduates from our most recent graduating class secured paid residency employment prior to graduation.

Employment of professional prosthetists and orthotists is expected to grow 18% over the next decade, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s much faster than the average for all occupations. Our graduates can be found working in:

Alabama State’s master’s in prosthetics and orthotics provides you with knowledge and skills in foundational anatomy and kinesiology, patient care and assessment, as well as a strong understanding of the steps needed to thrive as a professional in the discipline.

Build your competence and proficiency in clinical and research skills as you:

Study in facilities outfitted for the use of advanced technology.

Our students have access to an 8,000-square-foot laboratory facility with material and equipment used to complete traditional and advanced fabrication processes. The program curriculum prioritizes experience with our multiple 3D scanners and related software, as well as our 3D foam carver. Gait analysis and research skills are built with the support of technology from our interprofessional Biomechanics Lab, featuring a dual-belt treadmill with force plates and incline, decline and perturbation capabilities, as well as Vicon motion capture and EMG sensor systems.
