Turn Your Passion for Music Into Your Future

By Hazel Scott/ASU

Create. Record. Produce. Build your future.

If you hear music differently, imagine yourself behind the mixing console, or dream of turning your creativity into a career, Alabama State  University’s Bachelor of Arts in Music (Recording Technology) can help you turn your passion into professional skills.

Designed for students ready to explore the rapidly evolving music and media industries, the program gives you hands-on experience in audio production, recording, live sound, musicianship, digital audio technology and music production.

“You’ll work with digital audio workstations, recording equipment, plug-ins, virtual instruments, and professional sound reinforcement systems while developing the creative and technical skills employers and industry professionals value.”

Your Creativity. Your Sound. Your Career.

A music career today can mean much more than performing onstage. With a BA in Music (Recording Technology), you can prepare for opportunities as a:

  • Recording engineer
  • Mix engineer
  • Music producer
  • Live sound technician
  • Studio professional
  • Recording technician
  • Audio production professional
  • Composer or creative music professional

You’ll also develop transferable skills in technology, collaboration, problem-solving, creativity, and project development that can open doors across the broader music and media industries.

Get Real Experience Before You Graduate

At ASU, you won't just learn about recording—you'll practice it.

Students have access to a Music Computer Lab equipped for digital audio production and a fully stocked recording studio for technology classes and student projects. And because ASU students are not charged for studio time, you can spend more time developing your craft and building professional-quality work.

The program begins with foundational concepts and progressively builds your skills, making it possible for students with different levels of previous musical training to grow as musicians and audio professionals.

Your Music. Your Culture. Your Voice.

What makes the program uniquely ASU is its emphasis on the music of the African diaspora. You’ll develop your own creativity and musicianship while studying the history, traditions, and culture of Black artists and producers.

This distinctive perspective prepares you to enter today's popular and commercial music industries with both technical expertise and a deeper understanding of the cultural traditions that have shaped modern music.

A Degree Designed for What's Next

Whether your goal is to work in a recording studio, produce music, engineer live performances, continue your education, or create your own path in the music industry, ASU gives you a foundation to move forward.

Graduates of ASU's music programs have gone on to become performers, conductors, composers, recording technicians, and educators, while others have continued their education at prestigious institutions including the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston Conservatory at Berklee, Longy School of Music at Bard College, NYU Steinhardt, the University of North Texas, and Florida State University.

Your future in music starts with what you create today.

Ready to Make Your Mark?

The Bachelor of Arts in Music (Recording Technology) launches in 2027, with a goal of welcoming 20 new freshmen for the 2027–2028 cohort.

An interview and audition—or an interview and digital music portfolio—are required for admission to the program. Talent scholarships are available, and students must complete their audition or submit their digital portfolio before February 15 to be considered for a competitive award.

Your sound is your story. At ASU, learn how to make it your career.
