A new partnership between Alabama State University and the YMCA of Greater Montgomery will bring a YMCA facility to the ASU campus, marking a historic milestone for both entities.

University and YMCA officials announced the collaboration during a press conference held Monday, Oct. 13.

“Today’s announcement is a shining example of what we mean when we say ‘CommUniversity’ in both spirit and in action,” said ASU President Dr. Quinton T. Ross, Jr. “It’s a demonstration of how we as an institution are committed not only to educating students, but also to uplifting and empowering the community we serve.”

The YMCA will be housed in a renovated 5,000-square-foot facility near ASU’s Department of Communications building. The space will feature state-of-the-art equipment and serve as a hub for health, wellness and community engagement. It will be professionally staffed and managed by YMCA personnel

“This is the first YMCA on an HBCU campus nationwide,” said YMCA of Greater Montgomery President and CEO AJ Hernandez. “This means not only community growth, but it means access, potential achieved, and staff revitalized. Youths can now see themselves not only growing through the YMCA but also growing through the University together.”

The project will introduce a dynamic slate of collaborative programs aimed at fostering inclusive wellness for ASU students and the greater Montgomery community. Highlights include:

  • Health fairs
  • Mental wellness workshops
  • Specialized fitness and educational classes
  • Sports camps led by ASU coaches
  • Youth leadership development

“This is a catalyst for connection, growth and community. It represents our commitment to creating spaces where people come together, build relationships and shape the future,” said Dr. Jason Cable, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and Athletic Director.

The facility is expected to open in Spring 2026.
