Ministry leader

By Hazel Scott/ASU

Alabama State University (ASU) has entered into a significant partnership with Hope Inspired Ministries (HIM) to help transform lives by providing unemployed individuals with the tools and skills necessary to succeed in the workforce. This collaboration is a beacon of hope for many who are seeking to break free from the chains of poverty and unemployment, and it underscores the commitment of both institutions to community service and empowerment.

ASU's involvement in this partnership is multifaceted and deeply impactful. Dr. Keith Cole, a distinguished professor in ASU’s College of Business Administration, has been at the forefront of this initiative, engaging directly with HIM participants for the first time in January.  His topic provided an insightful lecture on various aspects of professional conduct and leadership. He emphasized the importance of conducting oneself appropriately in the workplace, being good stewards of one’s company, becoming productive leaders within organizations, and navigating potential roadblocks in one’s career.

“This collaboration is a testament to the impact that can be achieved when institutions come together with a shared vision of hope and opportunity,” said Cole, who said ASU provided lunch for the participants during his presentation. “I found it rewarding to give back to the community and help participants reach their goals.”

Amber Douglas, Brand and Marketing Director at ASU, said ASU has also supported HIM by fostering a sense of community and camaraderie.

“ASU is thrilled to partner with Hope Inspired Ministries,” Douglas said. “We will continue to support HIM and its mission by better informing the community about HIM’s contributions to the workforce training environment and the life-changing opportunities it offers through its innovative and effective programs that result in changing a life forever by ‘teaching people how to fish’!”

A Lifeline for the Unemployed

Hope Inspired Ministries is dedicated to helping individuals aged 18 and above break the grip of poverty by providing comprehensive workforce training and job placement services. The organization’s mission is to offer hope to vulnerable adults who seek purpose and self-sufficiency and who need a second chance to turn their lives around. HIM's approach is holistic and intensive, featuring an 11-week job training course that comprises nearly 400 hours of training. This course covers life and employment skills, character building, financial management, internships with local businesses, and GED training.

The program’s effectiveness is evident in its impressive success rates. Despite the rigorous demands of the training, 45-50% of students who enroll complete the course, and of those graduates, 85-90% find employment. These figures reflect the program’s strict structure and accountability measures, which ensure that participants are fully prepared to enter the workforce.

Success Stories and Impact

The transformative impact of HIM’s programs can be seen in the numerous success stories that have emerged over the years. One such story, shared by Dr. Cole, is that of a student in the the class he taught who aspired to become a firefighter. Despite his persistent efforts, he was unable to pass the required test. Faced with this challenge, he made the difficult decision to redefine his passion and pursue a different career path.

"This story is just one example of how HIM helps individuals reassess their goals and find new directions when faced with obstacles," Cole said.

Other success stories include those who have left behind lives of crime to become productive members of society. HIM’s comprehensive training equips graduates with the skills they need not only to obtain employment but also to maintain and excel in their new roles. This holistic approach ensures that graduates are not just prepared for jobs but also for a lifetime of success and personal growth.

Building a Better Future

The partnership between ASU and HIM is a shining example of how educational institutions and community organizations can work together to make a profound difference in people’s lives. By providing unemployed individuals with the tools and training they need to succeed, ASU and HIM are helping to build a better future for countless individuals and their families.

“ASU’s ongoing support of HIM ensures a collaboration that not only benefits the participants but also enriches the broader community by fostering a more skilled and capable workforce,” said Douglas.
