The former longtime director of Alabama State University's Department of Public Safety, James “Jim” Graboys, has been named the permanent police chief for the city of Montgomery after serving as the city's interim police chief since July 15, 2024. He was appointed following a nationwide search.

Graboys served in his role as head of ASU's public safety/police department for seven years from 2012-2019.

Among his accomplishments at the University was starting the Violence Against Women Program (VAWP), which has as its goal combating stalking, sexual crimes and assault. VAWP is still an active and ongoing program at Alabama State University.

Graboys was appointed to the full-time position as Montgomery's police chief on Jan. 6 by Mayor Steven Reed at a news conference held at City Hall.
