By Kenneth Mullinax/ASU

Alabama State University's Department of Public Safety is hosting a SWAT/Critical Incident Response Training and School Resource Officer Training Course on campus this week (July 22-onward) in coordination with Central Alabama Crime Stoppers. It is part of ASU’s Preventing School Violence Campaign.

The event is not open to the general public because of the sensitive nature of the training which has as its purpose better safeguarding ASU's campus, students and employees.

ASU’S director of Public Safety, Kelvin Kendrick, explained that the weeklong series of events taking place at ASU will feature training and live demonstrations for and by law enforcement officers, and SWAT teams from the Montgomery City Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, and Prattville Police Department, along with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

"Our ASU Preventing School Violence Campaign is sponsoring the event in coordination with Tony Garrett's Central Alabama Crime Stoppers," Kendrick said. "The purpose of the training is to better train the University's police officers and other law enforcement teams who provide support in matters of safety for the ASU campus, the Montgomery County Public School System and the community."

The Alabama State University Preventing School Violence Campaign is dedicated to promoting strategies and initiatives that enhance student and school safety and security through education, training, and community partnerships.
