ASU to Host 'President’s Student Leadership Empowerment Summit' on April 14

Alabama State University President, Dr. Quinton T. Ross, Jr., will host “The President's Student Leadership Empowerment Summit” on April 14. The event will be held in the auditorium of the University's Ralph D. Abernathy Hall. The 9 a.m. event is open to all current ASU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent alumni. There is no cost for attending, but registration is required.
Event organizer, Dr. Tanjula Petty, assistant provost of Student Success and Special Initiatives, explains that the Summit will include remarks and life lessons from President Ross, as well as speakers from the President's cabinet, guest leaders and specialists from outside the institution who all possess expertise related to the topics and issues that shape leadership and empower individuals.
"We are excited about this opportunity for our students, as the inaugural President
Quinton T. Ross, Jr. Leadership Empowerment Summit was designed to engage students
to exemplify quality leadership in this generation. This Summit help further cultivate
their skills to impact their school and community positively," Petty said.
"The Summit will highlight quality leadership principles and skills to assist the
student body at Alabama State University to become purposeful and empowering, while
supporting the constant pursuit of excellence. Additionally, it will provide a perfect
opportunity to show just how much true leadership can impact our student’s development,"
Petty added.
HARVARD EXPERT MAIN SPEAKER
Petty explained that for the past few years, Dr. Ross has shared his desire to develop
some type of leadership initiative for all students.
"ASU was awarded funds from the Strada HBCU Initiative that focuses on investment
in the next generation of leaders. While working on this initiative, it provided us
the opportunity to develop a Summit," said Petty. "We decided to test the waters and
do something small to build on each year for students. This year, we will have Brandon
Fleming - a debate coach at Harvard University - assisting us. He is the author of
‘Miseducated’ and the founder of the Harvard Diversity Project. He has a remarkable
story to tell from being a drug dealer to a Harvard educator. I am hoping that this
opportunity will ignite a fire in our students to want to be leaders and take on initiatives
to help the next generation of leaders."

All of the speakers and presenters at the event share one common attribute, which is they all are leaders. Among the many values that they will discuss and present to the attendees will be:

LEADERSHIP SKILLS HELP EVERYONE GROW WITHIN THE COMMUNITY
Petty believes that President Ross's Summit will allow students the opportunity to learn something new about themselves and their leadership potential through critical thinking, reasoning, logic and challenging their own thought processes and beliefs.
"After attending the Summit, we hope that our students will understand that they can serve as leaders both on ASU's campus and within their communities. This event is designed to develop solutions to problems, introduce new strategies, and fuel collaboration. Students will see the advantage of developing practical leadership skills, social responsibility, and increased interpersonal competence. Additionally, in our diverse society, we will impart to them that leadership comes in all shapes and sizes, and that everyone has a voice," Petty shared.
GOALS FOR STUDENTS IN ATTENDANCE
The goal of the President’s Student Leadership Empowerment Summit is to engage University students in understanding and utilizing quality leadership attributes. Another desired outcome is to expose them to opportunities to become professional and community leaders of the future. The Summit will highlight quality leadership principles and skills to assist the student body and recent ASU graduates to become purposeful and empowering change-agents who are involved in the constant pursuit of excellence.
The Summit will include a variety of initiatives that will help students grow and nurture their inner potential by learning about the topics to be discussed at the April 14 event, which include:
· Practical leadership skills, social responsibility, and increasing interpersonal competence
· Developing personal leadership style and the skills necessary to be a successful leader
· Diversity, global, and multicultural inclusion
· Opportunities to lead, serve and make a difference on campus and within the community.

this in mind, the Student Leadership Empowerment Summit is established as a program
