Alabama State University's associate archivist, Raegan Stearns, has been chosen to be a member of the cadre of Monroe Fellows by Tulane University’s Center for the Gulf South, which is located in New Orleans.
The fellowship, announced by Dr. Janice Franklin, dean of ASU's Levi Watkins Learning Center (LWLC/ASU Library) and Stearns’ supervisor, stated that it is a high honor to be selected for the Monroe Fellowship.
"We are proud that Ms. Stearns is now a Monroe Fellow whose mission is promoting a new and greater understanding of the geographic area known as the Gulf South and its residents," Franklin said.
Stearns stated that she was overjoyed and humbled to be made a fellow and expressed that she sees the recognition as an opportunity to continue her documentation of the legacy of black photographers in Northwest Louisiana.
"I plan to identify historical black photography studios, as well as independent practitioners located in the northern parishes (counties) of the state," Stearns said. "In addition, I want to launch an oral history project in which living black photographers can discuss their work and also that individuals with historical photographs depicting Northwest Louisiana’s black community can share the stories behind their images."
