An Alabama State University faculty member in the department of Management has earned
nationwide recognition from the Southern Management Association (SMA) for his research
into the corruption and illegal activities that exist in some nations, and the impact
on businesses.
ASU associate professor, Dr. Mahdi Bajestani, won the “Best Research Paper Award” from the SMA for his treatise on how foreign direct investment is affected by corruption,
bribes and other nefarious actions. Many business-people consider these kinds of activities
as part of the cost of doing business in certain nations of the world, excluding the
United States and other Western nations. His paper is titled “Where would you invest?
Revisiting the effects of foreign direct investment (FDI) on corruption.”
"I am very humbled and gratified to receive this recognition from a body of my peers at the Southern Management Association," stated Bajestani, who joined the Hornet Nation family in the fall of 2021. "This issue impacts most companies doing work in many nations and comes into play with certain foreign government officials demanding kick-backs or direct monetary compensation for such things as business contracts, professional licenses, business certifications, as well as not being unfairly subjected to prosecution or adverse criminal or civil adjudications against them or the products or companies that they represent."
Bajestani's dean, Dr. Kamal Hingorani, of the Percy J. Vaughn College of Business Administration (COBA), expressed how proud he is that one of his newest faculty members gained national notoriety so soon after joining the ranks of COBA's faculty.
"We are all very excited about the accolades recently bestowed upon Dr. Bajestani, but we are not surprised. He recently earned his CGBP (Certified Global Business Professional) credentials and earned his Ph.D. in Management from Old Dominion University and is currently teaching the capstone course in Business and the course on International Business."
Hingorani explained that this award will help Bajestani to continue research on topics
that are of importance both to academia and industry.
"This will help the University build upon the respect it has for the quality of research
being done and published by its faculty. This shows that it is indeed a great time
to be a Hornet," said the Dean.
