WHAT IS TITLE IX?
The United States Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is the federal agency charged with enforcing compliance with Title IX to prevent loss of federal funds. For more information on OCR, please visit their website at https://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/index.html . OCR requires that educational institutions appoint a Title IX Coordinator to help ensure federal compliance and implementation of policies and procedures that must be communicated to students and employees.
Title IX prohibits discrimination in educational program or activities including athletics; recruitment, admissions, financial aid and scholarships; course offerings and access; counseling; treatment of pregnant or parenting students; employment; and prohibits sex or gender based harassment or misconduct.

Any student who believes that he/she has been subjected to discrimination prohibited by Title IX, or that the University has failed to meet its Title IX obligations, may bring the concern to the attention of the University Title IX Coordinator, who has authority to address the concerns through formal or informal resolution in accordance with ASU’s Gender Based Misconduct Policy.
The Title IX Coordinator will work collaboratively with other University officials charged with responsibilities for student, faculty and staff conduct, discipline and safety.
Although a sexual misconduct report can be filed at any time, we encourage you to report incidents to ASU Campus Police immediately at (334) 229-4400, or by calling 911. Delay can impair the ability to collect forensic evidence, make arrests, or implementation of protective measures.
Regardless of whether you choose to report the incident to the police, you can contact campus resources, such as Violence Against Wo(men) Program (VAWP) or Student Counseling Services for assistance. Additionally, if you wish, the university can implement appropriate interim measures to provide for your safety, as well as the campus community, and to avoid retaliation. Examples of such measures include issuing a “No Contact Order” and/or making temporary accommodations with regard to housing, course schedules, work schedules, transportation and other related matters.
TALK TO SOMEONE
If you choose to speak to someone, there are two types of resources available: confidential and non-confidential.
- Confidential resources: Discussions with the counselors at the Student Counseling Center and the advocates at VAWP are confidential. They are not required to report the incident to the police or university officials unless permitted by you.
- Non-confidential resources: Discussions with professors, academic advisors, resident assistants, coaches, supervisors and all other University employees are not confidential and should be reported to the Title IX Coordinator, officials with a need to know, and or police.
If law enforcement determines that there is an ongoing threat to the campus community, essential information will be released to the extent necessary to protect the community. Your identity will remain confidential.

Sexual misconduct is a violation of ASU policy and may also be a criminal offense. The Title IX Coordinator, or designated investigator, will conduct an investigation to determine whether a policy violation has occurred using a preponderance of the evidence standard of proof. This process is separate from a police or criminal investigation.
A student or employee found guilty of sexual misconduct, stalking, dating/domestic violence, etc. will be subject to discipline in accordance with ASU disciplinary procedures and may also be subject to prosecution pursuant to Alabama criminal statutes.
Follow any and all “No Contact Orders” and/or other directives from University officials and the police. Failure to do so could result in disciplinary action, including dismissal.
