The convocation speaker is one of Alabama State University’s notable alumni, Dr. Tonya Chestnut.
About the Convocation Speaker
Dr. Chestnut has more than 35 years of instructional and administrative practice. She currently serves as a member of the state of Alabama School Board, representing District 5. Her impact on the field of education is represented by her present and past service as an educational consultant, dean of teacher education, principal coach, federal programs director, curriculum director, principal, teacher and pastor.
Dr. Chestnut is active in the community particularly through her serving as co-pastor of Fresh Anointing House of Worship Selma and as an active member of the Zeta Eta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc.; and the Alabama Retired Educators Association.
Dr. Chestnut is a proud alumna of Alabama State University, having earned her Master of Education degree in Early Childhood Education and the Educational Leadership Certification from ASU. She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Jacksonville State University, an Education Specialist degree from Auburn University in Montgomery, and an Instructional Leadership and the Doctor of Education degree in Transformational Leadership from Concordia University, in Portland, Oregon.
The Selma, Alabama native is married to Dr. Coley C. Chestnut, Sr. and they have five
children, five grandsons and one granddaughter.
