OFFICE OF DISABILITY FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

Q: Who is eligible to receive services provided by the Office of Disability Services (ODS)?
A: All students attending Alabama State University with a documented disability are encouraged to register early for services provided by ODS.

Q: How do I register with the Office of Disability Services (ODS) and receive accommodations?
A: First, you must be admitted as a student at the university. Then proper disability documentation must be provided. Once the documentation has been assessed, an ODS staff member will contact you if more documentation is needed (documentation, application, and class schedule with instructors name)  or to receive your accommodations. Finally preparation of faculty notification memoranda are given to you delivery. You will then deliver the documentation to your faculty member.

Q: Why can’t ODS deliver my disability accommodations and speak about my disability?
A: ODS acts as a liaison/advocate between you and your faculty member, but we also promote self-advocacy. We inform and encourage our students to speak one-on-one with their instructors so that they can establish a working and classroom relationship, and assist them with the best possible accommodations available.

Q: What documentation is needed to register for ODS services?
A: Please visit documentation tab requirements on our webpage.

Q: Where is the office located and how can I contact the office?
A: ODS is located in the John Garrick Hardy Student Center, first floor, Room C1.58. The ODS office hours are: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am through 5:00 p.m. (summer office hours may vary). Our phone number is 334-229-5127 and our fax number is 334-229-4165. We can also be reached by email at: disabilityservices@alasu.edu.
