Transportation Workforce Development
The Transportation Workforce Development (TWD) Program was established to garner interest among young adults in the transportation industry. The program is designed to expose high school and college students to career opportunities that exist in the transportation industry while also enhancing work-readiness, life skills, and leadership development. Additionally, students gain experience in transportation-related careers that link to their specialized program of study. This program is funded by the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and administered through Alabama State University.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Unless otherwise posted on specific job announcements:
- Must be current high school senior or college student
- Must be in good academic standing
- Available for a minimum for 20 hours a week
- Able to commit to approximately 6 months (24 weeks) internship

Where are job postings located?
TWD staff announces jobs at the local high school or colleges within the targeted region of the state. College students can expect to find announcements within their Career Services office and specific academic departments. High school students can expect school officials to make them aware based on academy participation or academic performance. Interested applicants are also encouraged to reach out to TWD staff at any point to inquire about openings.
Are the internships paid?
Yes. College students are paid at an hourly rate of $12, high school interns receive $9.
Do I have to provide my own transportation to the site?
Yes, you must have your own reliable transportation to and from the site.
Are all the necessary materials and equipment provided?
Yes, interns are provided with the necessary support and equipment needed by their ALDOT supervisor.
What kind of internships are available?
Generally speaking, all fields of study are available. However, internships are offered based on the current needs of the ALDOT region. Civil EGR, Computer EGR/ IT, and Business/ Public Administration are examples of recently placed interns.
Do interns work on the weekends?
No. The parameters of the 20-hour work week fall between 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

How are final candidates selected?
TWD staff will narrow down final candidates based on academic performance, coursework relevance and availability and make recommendations to ALDOT.
How will I be notified of the decision?
TWD staff will confirm receipt of your application materials and notify you of a decision via email.
Do I have to be an ASU student to participate in the program?
No. All students who are enrolled in high school and colleges throughout the state of Alabama are encouraged to apply.
