Colvin-Feagin Art Show Spotlights Quilts From Gee's Bend Area

The National Center for the Study of  Civil Rights and African-American Cultural at Alabama State University is hosting its “Annual Colvin-Feagin Art Show: Artistic Excellence Uplift, and Activism” on the first floor of the Levi Watkins Learning Center at Alabama State University. The show will run from July 11-31.

The art show will feature select quilts from the Freedom Quilting Bee Legacy of the Gee’s Bend area. It will highlight the artistry and craftsmanship of the artists and explore the collective’s historical quest for civil rights and economic uplift.

An Open Forum will be held starting at 11 a.m. on July 11, followed by a Quilting Workshop at 2 p.m. There will be limited seating for the Quilting Workshop.  The forum and workshop are free and open to the public.

The annual show was created to honor Dr. William E. Colvin and John W. Feagin, both ASU alumni and renowned artists who have played an important role in visual arts in the community. The show has become the center's premier exhibit to showcase the artistic talent of the ASU family, as well as other talented local and regional artists who interpret the spirit of the Civil Rights Movement and the African-American experience as a whole.

Fundraiser

The art show is used as a fundraiser to collect donations for the “Colvin-Feagin Art Gallery Fund,” which helps support the National Center’s mission of celebrating African-American culture through the Visual Arts.
