VAWP - POLICY
Alabama State University (ASU) is firmly committed to providing a safe environment for all of its students, faculty and staff. Sexual misconduct of any form is a violation of the ASU Student Code of Conduct. The University will not tolerate sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence or stalking, and will enlist all available resources in order to provide assistance, aid, and comfort to the victim, while pursuing all available avenues of criminal sanctions against the perpetrator.
VAWP - MISSION
The Mission of the Violence against Women Program (VAWP) is to coordinate comprehensive services and resources for the University that help to reduce offenses in the areas of sexual assault, domestic violence and dating violence and stalking. The VAWP is committed to providing culturally specific prevention and education programs for the University along with culturally relevant training for campus Law Enforcement and Judicial Administration. The effort will be guided with input and direction from an active Coordinated Community Resource Team. The purpose of the program is to help create and foster a “zero-tolerance” campus environment for Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence and Dating Violence and Stalking offenses.
WHO WE ARE
The Violence Against Wo(men) Program (VAWP) is organized to coordinate and implement Sexual, Domestic, Dating and Stalking (SDDS) violence services and programs for the campus community.
WHAT WE DO
ASU VAWP affectionately known as M.O.V.E, provides resources and services for our students by: establishing mandatory SDDS education opportunities for all incoming students; providing campus wide on going awareness events and educational programs for all students; offering on line SDDS education for faculty and staff; facilitating a Coordinated Community Response Team (CCRT) comprised of campus and community resources that are prepared and readily available to assist students 24/7 with SDDS issues; providing additional investigative training for the ASU Police Dept. and policy and procedural insight for the Judicial arm of Student Affairs and the Title IX office.
WHAT IS OUR GOAL?
The University has a zero tolerance for sexual assault, domestic violence, dating or stalking violence. The Mission of the Violence Against Wo(men) Program is to coordinate comprehensive services and resources for the University that help to reduce sexual, domestic, dating and stalking violence offenses .
SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS VAWP
The significance of the program is to provide assistance, aid, and comfort to victims while collaborating with all legal and law enforcement entities that will work to bring criminal sanctions/charges against t perpetrators.
HOW DOES VAWP LINK WITHIN TITLE IX?
VAWP focuses on prevention and education and the coordination of resources and services for SDDS. Title IX (TIX) works with victims who may have been discriminated against or suspect that their rights may have been violated. While VAWP focuses on sexual, domestic, dating and stalking violence, TIX addresses sexual harassment.
WHAT IS THE STRUCTURE OF VAWP ASU? WHO ARE THE MAIN PLAYERS?
Currently, the VAWP program is under the Office of the Chief of Staff. The program is directed by Ms. Cheryl Lang. Ms. Rolanda Horn, Executive assistant to the Chief of Staff provides invaluable assistance to the program. Various members of the Coordinated Community Response Team also work closely with the program to help achieve program goals and objectives.
AS OF TODAY, WHAT IS THE PROGRESS?
The program works very closely with the ASUPD and has established: a 24 hour Crisis line for students; an active Coordinated Community Response Team (CCRT); provided several strategic educational sessions for the ASUPD and for the Judicial Affairs staff ; provided over 40 educational programs and awareness events for students; currently have a VAWP Website under construction. VAWP is excited about the Campus Climate Survey that was approved by the ASU IRB. The survey was recently randomly administered to students. It will help to assess the student’s: awareness and opinion of the VAWP; and among other things, their knowledge base of the SDDS. VAWP is also pleased to boast the ongoing involvement of students with the planning of and implementation of programs and events. The student’s voices can be heard on WVAS doing VAWP Public Service Announcements.
